New national cemetery taking applications for burials

The National Cemetery Administration is taking applications for interments at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery.
“We’re hoping to have burials as early as December,” Don Murphy, director, said. “I’ve been contacted by many families expressing interest.”
The families have cremated remains of veterans awaiting interment.
The cemetery land is at 5525 Highway 1, Mims, Florida. The Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Cemetery Administration purchased the 318-acre site for $2.1 million in 2012. The VA awarded a construction contract to G&C Fab-Con last September, but two competing companies protested the decision and the case went to a hearing. Murphy said the company got a notice to proceed handed down from a federal hearing officer in March.
Workers had to move 55 gopher tortoises, then work launched in full swing.
