At a moving ceremony Jan. 16 at the National Navy UDT SEAL Museum, Fort Pierce, more than 40 veterans were awarded special, hand-carved Purple Heart canes, as a tribute from the Indian River Woodcarvers Association to recipients of the Purple Heart Medal.
Veterans from World War II to the Global War on Terror were awarded the canes, which are unique to each person who served.
Woodcarvers Association member and Army veteran Lloyd Lasenby was master of ceremonies. “This is a labor of love for us,” he said. “We do it out of love and honor for our veterans.”
