A very special guest visited Port St. Lucie Feb. 8 to help break ground for the upcoming Gold Star Families Memorial at Veterans Memorial Park, and to visit with students at Northport K-8 School.
Marine Corps retired Chief Warrant Officer 4 Hershel “Woody” Williams, 92, is the sole surviving Medal of Honor recipient from the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.
His day began with a visit to Northport K-8, beginning with the school band playing in the hallway as Williams entered, along with Principal Glenn Rustay.
At least 100 students were assembled, along with representatives of the Veteran Partners organization and the Gold Star Mothers of the Treasure Coast.
