It was clean cars on Saturday, March 19, and poker by motorcycle on Sunday, March 20 — all to help raise funds for an upcoming Gold Star Families Memorial to be emplaced in Veterans Memorial Park, Port St. Lucie, in September.
The monument, which is under construction in India of fine Italian granite, costs upwards of $40,000, and by most accounts, the campaign is only about halfway there.
The campaign is being done by the Gold Star Families Memorial Committee of the United Veterans of St. Lucie County, and since before the Feb. 8 groundbreaking ceremony, have been tireless in their fundraising activities.
On Saturday, committee members and volunteers did a brisk business at the Auto Zone, Prima Vista Boulevard, with up to 50 cars being washed, rinsed and hand-dried between 9 and 10 a.m. (the fundraiser wrapped up at noon).
